Religious Leaders, Germany: CDU Mayor and Catholic Church stand up for the mosque in Cologne
In August 2008, the city council of the German city of Cologne on the Rhine river voted with a majority in favor of of a new mosque - the biggest to date in Germany - for its large Turkish community. Only the far-right Pro Köln (Pro Cologne) initiative with its five seats and the Christian Democrats (CDU) voted against it. Our local best practise was chosen as the major of Cologne, Fritz Schramma, from the CDU voted in favor of this integration model, risking his longtime political life in the CDU. The Catholic church of St. Theodore also fundraised for its Muslim brothers and sisters. More details here.
